We're Evolving and Want Your Input

Hi All,

It has been far too long that I've posted on this blog, so I'm shifting gears and putting on my Marketing Hat to see what we can do together to foster greater community amongst users of our products and services. Some of the things we'd like to have your feedback on are:

  • Forum Activity - with nearly 4000 members, we're still wondering if the Yahoo discussion forum is helpful or if we should we use some other forum to foster greater participation from the community.
  • Contributions from the Community - Your contributions are valued tremendously. These contributions come in the form of documentation, examples, tutorials, translations, webinars, and workshops.
  • Hackatons (thanks MaTias Barletta for that idea) - this could be great fun and a great way to promote charitable community projects.
  • Beta Software - Do you like to beta test and what would be your expectations as a beta tester?
  • Word on the Street - Your blog, Twitter and website links back to our site are very much appreciated. When you do these things make sure we know.
  • Anything Else you think we should consider to foster better community.
Last but certainly not least, we'd like to understand what motivates (or would motivate) you to blog, twitter and contribute otherwise to fostering a better community. Please reach out to me via 214.550.0177 or email kathleen@themidnightcoders.com. Your time and input would be very much appreciated!

Cheers,
Kathleen Erickson

For the forum, one comment I have is that it would be nice to have more people answering questions. I've noticed that many questions go unanswered, and that most questions, when answered, are answered by Mark. Having some more experienced users monitor the forum would be very helpful.

You mention contributions. How do you make this happen? I have a very compelling enhancement to WebORB for PHP so that binary photo data could be transferred to the Flex/Flash Builder client for rendering.

I posted this request to Mark and did not even receive a polite "no thanks" and have given up in providing compelling enhancements.

Hi, actually, I think that you should move the forum to google groups. I personally hate all the yahoo stuff and login. And I think google groups it´s easier for everybody. The yahoo browser session is always in trouble. I don´t want to login each time I want to visit the forum site. (i´m not sure if this is happening just with me or any other people).

About answers in mailing-list. Yes, sometimes they go unanswered, but I guess it could be for 3 reasons:
1) The question has been answered in the forum before
2) The answer can be found at documentation
3) The Weborb"team"needs more people =). I know it´s hard to develop, do marketing, take care of weborb enterprise clients, etc, and answer to every question on community formums.

I really apreciate if there were more tutorials about weborb configurations (refering to messaging and RTMP stuff) on different Windows systems. It´s been hard for me to figure out how to get weborb ready on Win2008, and until now I couln´t find the way to make messaging work.

(sorry about wrong english)

Hi Guys,

Thanks so much for your feedback.

Santoshamb, I agree we need more from the Community answering questions. It really would be an opportunity for more experienced WebORB users to shine and help others less experienced.

Pete, thank you so much for your contributions. I see Mark responded. We want to find a way to reward contributions like that. I'm thinking maybe doing Developer Highlights, which would give you some exposure on our website. Another possibility is t-shirts or something else. What would be something that you'd like or that would help you?

XLeon, I tend to agree with you. The problem is that we have to find some way to move 7000 messages over to a new forum. Also, I might add one more reason to your list, Reason #4: Some people try to use the Forum for commercial support and it wasn't intended for that. We allow the post though in case someone in the Community can address it. As for more documentation, examples and tutorials, we think you will be very happy with what we come out with. We're working hard on new documentation, examples, etc. The new console is pretty cool too!

Keep your feedback coming guys. It really helps us.
