Channel 5 Korea

Channel 5 Korea is revolutionalizing the delivery of IT information through E4DS Webcast, which is an online web application used to broadcast technical news and seminars throughout Korea. The company chose WebORB for .NET to stream IT video on demand across the Internet to Korean viewers.

Business Scenario

There is a huge push by the Korean government to improve vocational, educational and technical training for Korean students and to make them "job ready". While there are many challenges to overcome with traditional academic approaches, the biggest challenge has been the disconnect between industry and schools. Workplace training has traditionally not been part of the academic process. Channel 5 Korea and E4DS is helping change this through online workplace "technical" training.

Application Description

E4DS Webcast is an online application that broadcasts technical news and video on demand (VOD) services, which include online seminars. The target market for this service is the growing number of IT students who would benefit from workplace training, but may not have adequate opportunities for this type of training. E4DS Webcast makes it possible for any study to benefit from workplace training and connect with experts in the field. This makes it possible to transfer in-depth IT knowledge from pro to novice rather quickly using the web as the transfer mechanism.

The Problem

The E4DS team had originally implemented interactive Internet broadcast for two-way communication using a polling mechanism, but this was very slow and it was stressing their servers. The team also needed to implement new functionality that enabled popup surveys, which only added more stress on the servers. In an attempt to reduce the server stress and poor application performance, the team reduced the polling interval, but this was not fundamentally a workable solution. The team needed a solution that could improve VOD performance and enable new functionality to be implemented. Live Cycle Data Services (LCDS) was considered, but this product did not support streaming media and the cost of buying both LCDS and Flash Media Services (FMS) was prohibitive.

The Solution

After careful evaluation, the E4DS team chose WebORB for .NET as its integration and media streaming solution, because it not only met the team's immediate functional requirements, but also had built in functionality that would enable the team to implement new application functionality over time.

According to Se Whan Myong, "We chose WebORB because WebORB is long-lived - its been around awhile. It integrates well with ASP.NET and the management console makes WebORB very easy to work with."

Features & Benefits

The E4DS Webcast team used the following features and received the following benefits as a result of including WebORB for .NET in their solution stack:

  • Media Streaming - video is now being broadcast at regular intervals, which has improved user experience.
  • Real-Time Messaging - the application is more responsive and able to deliver messages in real-time, which improves learning and customer satisfaction.
  • Polling - WebORB's polling mechanism was an improvement over the prior polling approach, which has improved performance of the application and reduced stress on the server.
  • Developer Productivity Tools - the management console was helpful for monitoring and detecting performance related problems.
  • Full-Featureset - while E4DS is using limited functionality at the moment, WebORB's robust feature-set is giving the team ideas on how to implement new features that leverage data push and remoting in the future.
