Messaging

Send SMS and text-to-speech voice messages, run one-time-password verification, validate phone numbers, and manage contacts through the MessageBird (Bird) platform.

19 actions available
A workflow event needs to notify a customer by text
Agent pulls the recipient number and message content from the event
Agent validates the number with Phone Number Lookup before sending
Agent sends the message with Send SMS
Agent confirms per-recipient delivery status with Get Message
Agent records the send and delivery outcome
A group send above a recipient threshold waits for approval before it goes out

What This Integration Enables

An agent can send transactional or notification SMS from a workflow, add phone-number one-time-password verification to sign-up and login flows, and place text-to-speech voice calls for critical alerts. It can validate and enrich numbers with lookup and HLR checks before messaging, keep contacts and groups current as an address book for outbound campaigns, and monitor account balance and delivery status. The verification actions pair Send Verification with Verify Token so an agent can confirm a code the user entered.

Without FlowRunner

Numbers sent blind Messages go to numbers nobody validated, so some silently fail
One channel only Text is the only option, even when a spoken alert would land faster
Contacts scattered Recipient lists live in spreadsheets that drift out of date

With FlowRunner

Validated before send Lookup and HLR checks confirm a number is real and reachable first
Text and voice available The agent chooses SMS or a text-to-speech call based on urgency
Address book in sync Contacts and groups are maintained as part of the workflow

Use Case Scenarios

Validated order confirmations

An order-processing workflow completes. Before texting the customer, the agent runs Phone Number Lookup to confirm the number is valid and formatted correctly. It then sends the confirmation with Send SMS and checks per-recipient delivery status with Get Message. Numbers that fail validation are set aside for a human rather than burning a send on an address that cannot receive it.

Phone verification on sign-up

A new user signs up and needs to prove they own a phone number. The agent calls Send Verification to deliver a one-time password by SMS, then Verify Token to check the code the user enters. On success it creates the contact with Create Contact and adds them to the right group. The verification runs autonomously because a wrong code simply fails without consequence.

Group campaign with a send gate

A team wants to notify a contact group about a service change. The agent assembles the group with List Groups, prepares the message, and reaches the human-in-the-loop step because the recipient count is above the configured threshold. A person approves the audience and content. Then the agent sends.

Human-in-Loop Highlight

Sending to a contact group reaches many customers at once, and a mistake there is visible to all of them. Before the agent runs a group send above a configured recipient threshold, it pauses and routes the decision to an operator: "Ready to send this SMS to 340 contacts in the West Region group. Approve the audience and message, or hold?" This is FlowRunner's human-in-the-loop pattern: the agent pauses on its own, presents the exact audience and copy, and resumes when the human responds. One-off transactional texts send without interruption. High-reach group sends get a human decision behind them.

Agent Capabilities

19 actions

Messaging

3
  • Send SMS Sends an SMS or binary message to one or more recipients with an alphanumeric or numeric originator, an optional reference, and scheduled delivery. Used for transactional and notification texts, with the caveat that alphanumeric originators cannot receive replies and are not supported everywhere.
  • Get Message Retrieves a single message by ID with its current per-recipient delivery status. Used to confirm whether a send actually reached its recipients.
  • List Messages Pages through previously sent and received messages. Used to review recent message activity.

Voice

1
  • Send Voice Message Places a text-to-speech voice call to one or more recipients in a selectable language and voice, with configurable answering-machine behavior. Used for critical alerts and reminders that need a spoken channel.

Verify

4
  • Send Verification Sends a one-time password by SMS, text-to-speech, or flash call to prove ownership of a number. Used to start a phone-verification step.
  • Verify Token Checks the one-time password a user entered against a verification. Used to complete the verification and confirm the number.
  • Get Verification Retrieves the status of an existing verification without submitting a token. Used to inspect an in-progress verification.
  • Delete Verification Cancels an existing verification so its token can no longer be used. Used to abort a verification the flow no longer needs.

Lookup

2
  • Phone Number Lookup Validates a number and returns its type, country, and formatted variants. Used to check validity before messaging.
  • Lookup HLR Queries the Home Location Register for live network and carrier status. Used to confirm a number is reachable, though it may incur a charge.

Contacts

5
  • Create Contact Adds a contact with a phone number, optional name, and up to four custom fields. Used to sync a new recipient into the address book.
  • Get Contact Retrieves a single contact with its fields and group memberships. Used to look up a known recipient.
  • List Contacts Pages through contacts in the address book. Used to build or review recipient lists.
  • Update Contact Updates a contact's number, name, or custom fields, changing only the fields provided. Used to keep contact data current.
  • Delete Contact Permanently removes a contact from the address book. Used in offboarding and data-governance workflows.

Groups

3
  • List Groups Pages through contact groups. Used to select an audience for a group send.
  • Add Contact to Group Adds one or more existing contacts to a group. Used to build campaign audiences.
  • Remove Contact from Group Removes a contact from a group without deleting the contact. Used to prune an audience.

Account

1
  • Get Balance Retrieves the account balance, payment type, and currency. Used to confirm funds before a campaign.
